Back Lit Film
There are many different forms that this can take. There are, of course, the large billboard type of back lit pictures that you get in the likes of Piccadilly and Times Square. The larger ones will be electronic and you can see these now on huge electronic signs on the M5 motorway. These can show a number of adverts with a guaranteed large coverage rate. Not the safest for the drivers though!
They can also be used in a smaller format at bus stops. These are more likely to be poster type pictures. Many large businesses use these to advertise their services. Many I’ve seen are for fast food services. Its maximum exposure for the services they are offering.
Then there are the formats that can be used in the home. These include:
Lit Cubes
This one has been home made. It is lit by a LED candle in the middle. It shows four different photos and these can be easily changed.

These cubes are easy to make. They are ideal for family parties, weddings, Christenings etc.
Wall Mounted Backlit Pictures:
The photo has been sandwiched between 2 sheets of acrylic (each 2mm thick). Behind the acrylic is a 12 inch blue cathode (tube light) fixed to the wall.

Stand Alone Frames
This frame is lit by small LED lights around the edge. Again, this is ideal for home. Your favourite picture which is lit up and this photo can be changed at any time.
Many companies use them in their foyers as they are effective and eye catching. Different from the normal photo frames you would normally see.

Obviously the huge signs aren't something I can use for my project but I like the idea that photos can used on a screen that big. Seeing one of my photos on a screen like that would be amazing!
I really like the screens that light up but, again, I don’t think that would be appropriate for my 10 photos. This is mainly because of cost. I would need 10 separate frames. See costs below.

Canvas Prints
These are very popular at the minute and very easy to order online.
The image is printed onto canvas which is stretched (or gallery-wrapped) onto a frame. Canvas prints are often used in interior design using stock images and this was what they were mainly used for. However, in recently years they have become easily available to the public.
It is best to use a photo that has an area of clear space around the main person or object as the picture is printed and stretched around the edges of the photos. Having said that, you can specify if you just want your picture printed on the front of the canvas which avoids this problem. I personally prefer the wrap around look.

This is a canvas I had printed of my son. The picture is folded over the edges so by having the area at the top of the picture it wasn’t his head that got folded over!

The picture shows how the top of his head has been ‘folded over’.

This is a screen shot from an online canvas print company. As you can see, you can also have one photo split across three canvases.

Here you can select the wrap you want for your photo.
The first is the picture wrapped around the canvas. It’s not a good choice when your photo subjects aren’t near the edges of your photo. The photo image will be wrapped around the edges of the canvas (this is standard). If you’re subjects are too close to the edge, you will lose between 20mm and 40mm from each.
Colour Wrap gives you solid colour, which you choose, on each edge of your photo. With this you are not losing any of your photo from the front of the canvas. The image will be wrapped slightly over the edge of the frame before a block edge starts.
Mirror Wrap is when your photo is mirrored on the edge of your canvas so none of your photo is lost from the front of the canvas.

This is a photo that I uploaded to this site. You can change the size of the canvas and also reposition your photo.

The site also gives you options to place the photo in different situations which I think is an excellent tool to help you place the photo.
